Benchtop fume hoods are fume containment boxes mounted on a bench or cabinet. They are normally connected to the building HVAC exhaust system in order to draw harmful fumes away from the laboratory and users. Benchtop fume hoods are generally chemical fume hoods but other types of exhaust hoods can be mounted on a bench or counter. These fume hoods can be mounted on steel, wood or plastic laboratory cabinets and tables for standing and sitting procedures. Benchtop fume hoods are available in many standard sizes from 3′ to 8′ wide and can be customized to suit specialized lab applications.
Fume hoods can be equipped with lab gases, electrical, data, water and drain plumbing services. Accessories and apparatus inside the hood make it easy to set up test procedures. Glass fume hood sashes are designed to protect users and to control the amount of air flow in and out of the hood. Vertical rising sashes, horizontal sashes and combination sashes are available in different glass types. Automatic sash operators reduce energy use when the fume hood is not being used. Fume hood monitors detect the face velocity of airflow coming into a fume hood. Alarms sound if airflow falls below acceptable limits for safe fume containment and exhaust ventilation.
